Speaking of self-reflection, there was a certain area that was still something of a sore spot for the young Saiyan man. Even as a member of a Noble family, he had to admit that he was somewhat... envious of some of the company he'd been in. Maybe it wasn't the right word, but he would still often compare himself to others around him.
Sure, he wasn't infused with the power of Royals, or had the bloodline of a royal family. He wasn't born from the genes of other warriors mixed together, though perhaps that was for the best. After all, he was becoming strong on his own merit, not because someone stitched him together like a science project.
He's not bitter, no sir.
So maybe he wouldn't be able to reach the levels of a Super Saiyan like the legends said, like others had. Maybe the others were doing it wrong anyway, if there were more than one. Maybe the true power of the Saiyan race lay within the strength common to them all, their ability to grow stronger during and after battles, and the transformation that even children could perform.
True, unfiltered Saiyan power.
All this theorycrafting, of course, has led to Maiz training underneath a hanging powerball in the sky, going through both physical and energy techniques he had while transformed. It was currently his largest powerup, and the more accustomed he was to using it, the more effective it would be. He would even start to throw in tail-swipes in his flurries of attacks, in an attempt to make the transformation far more natural and easy to use mentally as well as physically.

If there was one thing Maiz loved to do, it was create new attacks.
Sure, he had a good deal of them already, but having more to fall back on in different situations felt... almost necessary, at this point. Who knew what he would run into when he and Onyan returned to Vegeta? Or finally headed to Plant? He had to be ready for anything.
As such, he's currently mulling over his options at different ranges from his opponent. Carbon Cutter, Flare Up and Photosphere Barrier covered for short range fairly well, and his most powerful move was ideally used around midrange. He had some decent utility with his Proto-Chain.
Ironically, long-range which was his favorite distance seemed to have the least amount of options. He'd either hit them with an explosion or a beam. Was that really all there was?
Maiz frowns thoughtfully, considering it. It was obvious Ki could be used in a lot of different ways, especially since he used it for different melee applications. Maybe that was the problem; he was separating it as if range mattered.
The Saiyan takes a breath, then slowly lifts his hand up, his index and middle fingers as well as his thumb extended and pressed together to concentrate the energy to a thin point. Then, he charges his body, filling himself with as much Ki as he can generate, his aura starting to crackle slightly, before he concentrates it all to the tips of his finger and thumb and fires.
A blue beam streaks forward, slamming right through the trees ahead of him. This beam doesn't explode, it simply pierces through everything ahead of him before finally dissipating in the distance.
--------------
Learning ability: (25%) Absolute Magnitude: Maiz extends his hand in front of him, leaving only his index/middle fingers and thumb fully extended. After a brief charge, he fires a thin beam designed to pierce his target, rather than explode.

As much as Maiz loves physical training, there were days he needed to slow it down and work on the other aspect of his game. That meant that today, instead of sparring with the other two Saiyans, he would "get back to nature" as it were, or at least commune with this planet's wilderness as opposed to his own native planet's.
Wearing only pants for decency, Maiz leans against a tree, his eyes closed. If one were to come across him, they'd probably think he was just napping in the shade, but nothing could be further from the truth. His senses were on high alert, stretched out as far as they could go to take in every sound, every scent, every soft vibration. Without even opening his eyes, Maiz could picture everything going on around him in vivid detail. He could even tell how cloudy it was from how often the sun was interrupted from falling upon his skin.
Hours pass, and animals come and go around him, taking note of the motionless Saiyan and accepting the fact he wasn't going to move to threaten them in any way.
Only then does he actually fall asleep.

"Oof! That was a good one!"
Maiz wheezes as the wind is knocked out of him by Chaya. He'd promised to help her learn to control her power, and part of that involved sparring several times throughout the week. While a normal sparring match between the two would have been solely for her benefit, he was trying something different.
First off, he'd already sparred with Onyan earlier in the day, trying to match his power level to hers exactly throughout the fight. That battle had gone pretty well, although now he was definitely feeling drained from the intensity. He'd purposefully gone from that spar into battling Chaya, lowering his power level and finely tuning it to stay as close to her level as he possibly could.
For once, he didn't really care if he was winning or losing. The point of this training for himself was to continue training his Ki mastery, finely tuning it as much as possible to use exactly how much he needs in a certain moment.
Smack.
Maiz gets punched in the face, then laughs again.
"Keep going! You're doing great!"

Ki control, as ever, remains an important part of Maiz's training. Now that he'd managed to figure out how to hit exact levels as he fights, it was time to get his body used to sudden surges as needed.
This concept has brought a similar method to one he'd used months ago, where he would situate himself in the air, away from the ship, and suppress his power as low as it could possibly go while still being able to hover in place. Then, suddenly and explosively, he would push himself to his absolute full power without transforming as fast as possible, instantly filling his body with Ki.
After holding it for a moment, he would let the power drop and suppress it back down to nearly zero. Then, power up again.
Up and down, high and low, Maiz would strain his body, pushing his body to its limits in terms of being instantly ready for a battle.

Now they had a lead.
Not to say that Maiz was missing motivation before, but the idea that there was an answer to the problem he'd been wracking his brain over was enough to redouble his efforts in training. As such, he would work with the ability that had great potential, but was basically the most unfamiliar for him.
Channeling Ki through his tattoo, Maiz would form his Resonant Enhancement Circle in front of himself. This was the easy part, as simply swinging through it or sending an attack through made it stronger. The actual training part, however, would be a bit more difficult.
Concentrating, Maiz would begin trying to shrink and grow the circle rapidly, ranging from just wide enough for him to kick through with both legs, to barely wide enough to accommodate a thin Ki attack passing through. The process was painstakingly meticulous, as he needed to make sure it could shrink and expand at a moment's notice if it was to be effective in melee combat.
Speaking of, once he'd begun to get the hang of it, Maiz would begin moving the circle around as he shrank and expanded, darting it from side to side, up and down, moving slower at first but gradually picking up speed. If he could manage to move it fast enough from one side to the other, than even a flurry of punches could be given a quick boost.

This was the most dangerous training he'd ever done.
Earlier in the day, there had been an argument over whether he talked too much. Maiz, of course, believed that wasn't the case, while Onyan had assured him it was true. As a result, the two had made a bet: whoever spoke first during the day lost, and Chaya would be the judge.
And boy howdy, Maiz did not want to lose.
The two, of course, tried to sabotage each other. She would eat from his plate, he would "accidentally" touch her tail, but not a word was spoken. Finally, it had come down to the two glaring at each other from across the table, eyes locked and refusing to look away.
Give up, Onyan. Give up. Give up.
Maiz repeats it over and over in his head, struggling to will the words into her mind, as if his expression wasn't telling the entire story. A full half hour passes, with him repeating the same mantra in his mind, before she suddenly stands up and points.
"AHA! You talked!"
Maiz points right back.
"You talked first!"
"No way, I heard you!"
The two turn to Chaya, who sheepishly admits she'd heard Onyan first, causing Maiz to jump for joy!
He knew just what he wanted for winning.

"Alright. Let's try this out."
Giving a slow breath, Maiz closes his eyes, then activates the Lamps in his eyelids. It was the first time he'd tried it inside the ship since they'd left Vegeta, and he wanted to make sure they worked before they arrived at Myria. After all, Rhosians were supposed to be pretty strong, and any mercenaries he ran into, he wanted to be able to dominate them to the point where he could question them after, and not have to murder them in a last-ditch effort for survival.
No, it was questions first, then murder.
Instantly, he feels himself grow larger, the black fur spreading across his body. At this point, it felt natural to transform, almost like he'd been doing it all his life, and he opens his eyes slowly, unhurried.
Relaxed.
While he did do some exercises as he normally would during the next two days, Maiz wouldn't extensively "train" in the typical sense. Instead, he would go through the days without reverting from his Oozaru form, whether it be eating, relaxing, or even sleeping. He'd already managed to master the rising anger that had come with the form, but now, he was aiming on simply mastering the form itself.

"HYAH!"
Maiz throws a blast of energy into the air, firing the largest, most powerful ball of energy he can without using one of his best techniques.
Without hesitating, he dives forward after it, fast enough to leave an image behind before it fades from existence, causing him to appear in front of the ball. He whips a hand forward, slamming it into the ball and adding more energy to it, before barely managing to knock it back the other direction.
Back and forth he goes, like a human sized ping-pong match, each time causing the ball to grow in power and size, until finally Maiz is unable to stop it.
The ball explodes while he's in the air, causing him to come tumbling down to the ground, completely exhausted and torn up.
"....hah.... just like... old times..."
He groans from the ground.
Time to call for Onyan.

True to his word, Maiz is going to steal Onyan's move.
Well, to put it more accurately, he's going to put his own slight spin on it. He loved the idea of coating his tail in energy, especially since he had a habit of letting his tail move loosely behind him when he was an Oozaru, but that was somewhat... dangerous. It was a bad habit that he was working on fixing.
But now, he had an idea for dealing with anyone who came for it.
It took a while, but soon he had mimicked Onyan's ability of coating his tail in energy, but he wanted to go one step in a different direction. He refines the energy, making the edges sharper and thinner, before swiping his tail, cleaving the mug he'd been drinking from in two.
"Ayyyy! Perfect!"
It was just like his Carbon Cutter, but... smaller. He'd have to name it something else.

Inspired by his mind-fight with Onyan, Maiz is trying to figure out how far he can push it.
Once again, he finds himself in a clear field, like one he remembered seeing on Vegeta, with his opponent standing in front of him. This time, however, his foe stood quite a bit higher from the female Saiyan he traveled with. In fact, it was more of a mirror image.
Face to face with himself.
In theory, it was a great training exercise. After all, his opponent had all the same capabilities as he did, the same power, the same techniques. However, as the fight dragged on, it became increasingly obvious that there would be no winner. In fact, there wouldn't even be a satisfying draw. The fight simply ended as the two lay there, exhausted. Every attack had been met with the same attack at the same time, canceling each other out. It was less of fighting a similar opponent and more of fighting... nothing.
"...I'm gonna have to think of someone else, next time."
Maiz pants from the ground, exhausted, before ending his mental training.

He'd done a lot of training for his different forms and transformations, but at this point, it felt like he was starting to stall. General improvement was fine, of course, but to Maiz, having something to focus on felt more worthwhile. As a result, he's decided to try and refine one of his oldest and more powerful techniques. It was the first one he'd come up with in order to use as much Ki energy as possible in one shot, and while that was effective, it was also incredibly draining.
Maiz extends one arm out, while bracing his bicep with the opposite hand. Then, he takes a moment to charge as usual, feeling the energy flow through him and gather into his hand, before firing a large spherical fireball-like projectile, letting it fly into the distance before exploding. It felt just as powerful as before, just as draining. But was there somewhere he could improve upon?
He takes a minute, considering it, before going through the motions again, this time slower. Maybe he could stop doing this movement, or charge at the same time, shaving a few fractions of a second off charging time. If he pushed himself harder, he could shove more energy out, but it would feel more draining.
Or he could just keep using the ability over and over, trying to make it feel more like second nature. At the moment, he'd focus on the last option. The more he used it, the more he could refine it.

There's times it feels like Maiz has trouble focusing.
He'd planned on continuing to work on his Supernova attack, but in the process, inspiration for another technique had spontaneously sprouted. Charging up attacks made it pretty obvious where the danger was coming from, which meant that it gave the enemy more time to dodge. Usually, one could compensate with larger blasts, faster beams, or simply wearing down the opponent first, but those were all things people were used to.
Instead, he wants to change the avenue the attack approaches from.
Floating in the air, Maiz would focus his power first, getting a good solid grip on it. Then, he focuses on the magnetic field of the planet below him, specifically where his imagined opponent would be. It was a weird feeling, one that he wasn't used to in the slightest, but that's what training was for.
After all, if other Saiyans could do it, he could do it too.
Finally, after a few minutes of focusing, Maiz whips his hand upwards, disrupting the magnetic field and creating an atomic explosion in the ground itself that shoots towards the sky!
The crater left behind makes Maiz give a sheepish laugh.
"Whew. I better not use that around the ship."

Sweet Kami, was Maiz frustrated.
He was stronger than he'd ever dreamed he'd manage to accomplish in this amount of time. He'd managed to make it to the false power of Super Saiyan, and he'd even had some sort of Oozaru mutation that enabled him to remain mostly small, but still retain his power and agility.
Yet through it all, he still couldn't become a Super Saiyan. Not a true one, like the others had.
It didn't make sense. He was at least as strong as his "squad leader", though the fact Onyan and he had ditched the man to do their own investigating was probably something he should revisit at some point. Most Saiyans weren't even close, he was well beyond the normal Elite level. Yet still... he couldn't do it.
Maiz powers up in frustration, letting his energy flow around him recklessly, uncontrolled. Smaller rocks start to levitate into the air, before being pulverized by the pressure he was putting out. He'd felt that taste of something more when he'd first tried to tap into false Super Saiyan, but ever since, he couldn't reach it.
It was infuriating.
Abruptly, Maiz cuts off his power, still visibly seething but trying to calm down. Ilago had given him advice to tap into that first stage, that the power had come due to a need rather than simply getting stronger. Even though Maiz still felt that he needed to become a Super Saiyan, it just wasn't happening.
"...maybe it's not the right time."
It was better than thinking he couldn't do it at all, he supposed.
