Apparently, scouters weren't as reliable as Maiz first believed.
His battle with those strange bug men had shown him just how fallible the machines truly could be, and as such, Maiz has decided he needs to be able to track things without their help.
How?
Well... that's a little more difficult to do. It's like teaching yourself how to swim when you've never gone in water past knee-height. Several failed attempts of just "knowing" where things were has brought Maiz (with several new bumps and bruises) to his current training method.
Maiz sits in an open field, with a piece of cloth wrapped around his head to blind his eyes. There with him is his sister's pet dog with a bell tied to its tail. At first, he listens to it move with his ears, giving him a sense of where the dog is. But the more he concentrates on the sound, the more he can... feel the dog's movements, it's presence... it's very life force.
Not just the dog. He can feel everything around him. The wind, the trees, the grass. Everything has a little bit of life to it, just barely enough to pick up on if he really, truly concentrates on it.
"Stupid bugs. I'll find them next time."
